Summary |
| Non-Medical Grade Silicone Vessels for Simulation Models and Multilayer Artificial Abdominal Walls |
This is a multilayer artificial abdominal body wall that has similar tissue texture and consistency when compared to the ones found in live animals or humans. This MAABW has silicon-based blood vessels that are integrated within its multilayer structure. These vessels are interconnected and can support moderate intra-luminal liquid pressure, similar to the diastolic blood pressure encountered in many different species. Their purpose is to “bleed” once they are cut, and therefore will give the trainee the opportunity to learn and or practice basic methods of surgical hemostasis. More Information... |

| Mucosal Pocket at the Interface Between an Osseointegrative Implant for Anchorage of an External Prosthesis and Skin |
Following amputation, either surgical or traumatic, an osseointegrative implant is placed in the long bone of a damaged limb. A granulation bed will be made and encouraged to form a cup. A graft from the mucosal epithelium will be used to connect the skin to the mucosa creating a mucosal lined socket that covers the end of the amputated bone. The mucosal cup/implant stays moist, which is less irritating, has inherent antibacterial properties, requires less hygenic care, and eliminates hair growth into the implant/soft tissue interface. All these factors reduce the incidence of infection and maintain a permanent successful implant/body interface. More Information... |

| Dynamic Stabilization Device for the Manipulation of the Axis of Rotation of the Lumbar Spine |
The device is a bilateral pedicle screw-based system connected by titanium rods that incorporates movement in the screw-body interface to project the center of rotation out of the implant. Preliminary studies on cadaver spines show that this design adds stability in flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation as well as restores proper center of rotation location. The device is designed for simple assembly and surgical installation and may be used for multiple level spinal implantation. More Information... |

| Total Synthesis of Largazole and Derivatives and Their Use as Prodrugs for the Selective Inhibition of Histone Deacetylases (HDACs) in Cancer Therapy |
Disruption of HDACs has been linked to a wide variety of human cancers. HDAC inhibitors have shown to be potent inducers of growth arrest, differentiation, and/or apopotic cell death. Some newly synthesized compounds are potentially effective agents for cancer therapy and, possibly cancer chemoprevention. More Information... |

| ELISA Analysis of Progesterone in Biological Fluids Using Cuvettes and a Densimeter |
A method to measure concentrations of progesterone in biological fluids using a cuvette that can be read in a densimeter. An antibody that binds rabbit gamma globulin is coated to the cuvettes prior to analysis. An antibody to progesterone that has been produced in rabbits is added to the cuvettes followed by a sample of biological fluid containing an unknown amount of progesterone and a known quantity of progesterone conjugated to an enzyme that will react with a particular substrate to form a colored product. The intensity of the color is quantified in the densimeter and the amount of progesterone in the biological sample is deterimined. More Information... |
